SHANIKO, Ore. -- The life of a 12-year-old girl is lost, and her grandfather left with serious injuries after a single vehicle rollover accident on Highway 97. It happened south of Shaniko Monday morning.
Oregon State Police say it happened around 8:00 am Monday, Nov. 30th. 56-year-old Theodore Travis, of Prineville, was driving a Dodge pickup southbound when he traveled across the northbound lane and onto the shoulder. The pickup rolled and landed upside down in the middle of the highway.
Araceli Torres-Lopez died at the scene. She was ejected from the vehicle, but troopers are trying to figure how, because they say she was using safety restraints.
It took crews 90 minutes to free Travis from the pickup. He was transported to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend with serious injuries.
Araceli was a 7th grader at Clara Brownell Middle School. The Umatilla School District and the Umatilla-Morrow Education Service District's Crisis Flight Team are helping students and staff cope with the loss.
