ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) - A 51-year-old Long Beach, Wash., woman was killed and a Vancouver, Wash., man was seriously injured in a head-on crash that closed the Astoria-Megler Bridge across the Columbia River for about four hours.

Oregon State Police say a vehicle driven by Kathleen Ann Brock of Long Beach was southbound on the bridge Tuesday morning at a reported high rate of speed when she tried to pass a vehicle towing a trailer. Her car collided head-on with a northbound pickup truck driven by 57-year-old Herbert Goebel of Vancouver. He was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Health Center in Portland. The Oregonian reported he was in critical condition Tuesday evening.

State police Sgt. Andrew Merila says the crash took place on the flat stretch of the bridge in clear conditions. The investigation is continuing.
