YAKIMA, Wash.- Sunday's Shooting in Terrace Heights is the 12th homicide in Yakima County this year. That's almost the same as the total number of homicides last year.

Neighbors know Butterfield as a quiet road in Terrace Heights. On Sunday morning, a fight broke out over a cover charge for alcohol at a party there.

"I saw the police lines and just thought on no this can't be good," said Denise Withers.

One man was shot. Another died, making this the 12th homicide this year and for neighbors a rude awakening.

"It's scary, you just don't know, when you go to a party you don't know. People don't just put a fist up anymore they pull out guns and knives," said Withers.

Yakima County Coroner Jack Hawkins flips through files of homicides this year. He says this problem isn't going away.

"A lot of gang activity you know, you shoot one of my people, I'll shoot one of yours, unfortunately that escalates," said Hawkins.

This year, 10 of the 12 homicides were caused by gunshot-wounds. Last year there were 18 homicides. We're barely half-way through 2009 and already at 12 homicides.   

"It's too close to home, its really scary cause you hear about it everywhere else like downtown," said Withers.

Neighbors say they're worried they'll see more homicides this year but there are efforts being made right now.

"We're trying to get little ones to not get into the same trend as their older brothers and sisters," said Hawkins.
