A new Department of Energy study reveals Hanford's Waste Treatment Plant may be operational years earlier than previously thought, but at an added cost.
DOE says if they can build a second pre-treatment facility, that should allow them to get the low-activity waste plant up and running, and some waste treated before the heart of the plant is complete. More>>
The Department of Energy has finally approved new seismic standards on the two largest parts of Hanford's Waste Treatment, or Vitrification Plant and it means work is expected to fully restart within the next 30 days. More >>
The Department of Energy has finally approved new seismic standards on the two largest parts of Hanford's Waste Treatment, or Vitrification Plant and it means work is expected to fully restart within the next 30 days.
Seismic issues on the pretreatment and high-level waste buildings halted construction a year ago amid controversy the plant couldn't hold up in a large earthquake. More >>

Support facilities at Hanford's Vitrification Plant are taking shape.
The plant will be supported by a cooling facility capable of cooling more than 22,000 homes, a substation for 2,000 homes and a state of the art air compressor that can fill a Goodyear blimp in only three minutes. More >>

It's making the area safer, but what do residents actually know about vitrification at Hanford.
The process involves mixing radioactive tank waste with a sand, then melting it by running electricity through the mix before letting it settle as a glass. The solid can then be transported somewhere for safe storage. But as Hanford is cleaned up, people we talked to feel the Department of Energy needs to do more to educate the public. More >>

$11.5 billion, that's how much researchers now anticipate it'll cost to complete Hanford's Vitrification plant.
Now the total is $7.2 billion more expensive than the plant's orginal estimate of $4.3 billion. That's one billion dollars more than the last estimate in December 2005. More >>
