DETROIT, Wash. - A strange series of events has left an unlikely boat at the top of the point standing after the first day of racing in Detroit.
Ken Muscatel and David Williams split the driving duties in the U-2.25. Muscatel finished first in Heat 1-A. Williams finished 2nd in Heat 2A. On a day when four different boats won four different heats. that was enough to stand atop the leaderboard afte rhte first day of racing.
When told by reporters that he was the Saturday points leader, Muscatel seemed surprised. "We are?" he asked. Muscatel said, "we got some breaks and some luck. Here we are. There's a long way to go..."
Heat 1-A gave Muscatel a rare heat win when three boats went dead on the water. Greg Hopp & the U-100 and J.W. Myers & the U-100 were on the water, but couldn't make it to the starting line. Jimmy King's U-3 blew an engine - literally shucking parts - and couldn't finish the race. That left Muscatel and U-21 driver Kevin Ayelsworth alone on the course. Aylesworth had started the race as the trailer and was unable to make up the distance. So, the U-2.25 got its first heat win of the season.
In Heat 2-B, it was David Williams at the helm, but starting the heat as a trailer along with the U-21. Mike Weber in the U-5 hooked the boat to avoid a collison with the U-10, causing him to miss the exit pin . He had to circle back to get it. Jean Theoret in the U-37 jumped the gun and got hit with a one-lap penalty. J.W. Myers in the U-10 cruised to victory, but - in an unusual move - was told to take one extra lap in case the ABRA decided to penalize him for the dust-up with the U-5. After reviewing the situation, the ABRA did not penalize the U-10 which meant Myers got the win. If they had penalized Myers a lap, the U-2.25 would have won heat 2-B as well.
