Club Sports Affecting College Recruiting

Running year-round, club sports such as soccer take the best high school players and puts them on the same team. When a college coach comes out he is seeing the best of the best.
"Club soccer is for the more dedicated soccer player, with the cost involved, the travel involved," said club coach Scott Smith.
"Club soccer, there is a lot more skill involved," said Club Player Andrew Yabusaki. "High school soccer is just a lot more rough and tumble, run fast and kick hard. Club is a lot more passing tactical."
Many players say with the increased quality of club soccer comes more and more college coaches looking for players.
"They told us they got people watching us, scouts, college people and high school ball we might have a couple scouts there but most games are a little bit of fans and not as much support," said player Salvador Mendoza.
Kyle Vierck is the head soccer coach at CBC.  He says when it comes to his recruiting, it doesn't matter whether a player is playing club or high school soccer.
"It really doesn't matter," he said. "A player is a player no matter where he or she is at. As much as players want to think that every time I go out to play a club match somebody is watching, that is just not the case. What it boils down to is young people and their families pursuing the school and really making an effort to do it. Ultimately, taking the initiative is so important."
