Qualifying begins Thursday for the inaugural Oryx Cup-UIM World Championship on the Arabian Sea against the booming city backdrop of Doha, Qatar --the first stop for the unlimited hydroplane powerboat series’ race outside North America.

The salt content in Qatar is 50% more dense than San Diego.  "More salt in the air and will cause more trouble for the turbines,” said U-16's Dave Villwock.  "It’s something we have to deal with.  We know there are some challenges there that may cause us trouble.”

Hopp Racing is targeting the Grand Prix World Championship

It took a Seattle auto dealer with aircraft power to snatch the Gold Cup from the Easterner's back in 1950.  Greg Hopp, a Boeing Aircraft employee, will try to do it to the Easterner's with automotive power, and bring the World Championship to Snohomish, and Washington State.

Also this year in Evansville was the LOUD Grand Prix's, which brought the thunder back to Thunder on the Ohio.  Greg Hopp ran 132.846 MPH on the record course, breaking last year's 123.660 MPH record for single automotive powered hydroplane set by Jerry Hopp.

The Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) has now gained official approval from the sport's governing body, the UIM, to host the final round of the ABRA Unlimited Hydroplane World Championship, which will now be known as the Oryx Cup - UIM World Championship.

A wild weekend of racing that saw the top two teams battle it out in the first heat, resulting in the U-16 Dave Villwock flipping and U-1 Steve David being disqualified.  Meanwhile, Ted Porter's team was having a spectacular weekend.  U-5 Jeff Bernard won all three heats and the final, while teammate J. Michael Kelly took second in the U-7.

The two teams have battled all year with just 249 points separating the U-16 Elam and the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto coming into the second to last race of the year.  In Heat 1A, the two boats were matched up again.  In the final turn, Dave Villwock in the U-16 flipped.  After review, officials ruled that Steve David moved out on the U-16.  David was disqualified.

EVANSVILLE 2009: Steve David vs, Dave Villwock continues. This time, David takes top qualifying spot

The battle between Dave Villwock / U-16 Elam and Steve David / U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto was in the spotlight Saturday.  The Ellstrom team floated down river to the Oberto team a watermelon.  Watermelons a known in boat race as bad luck.

That didn't stop David from grabbing the top qualifying spot. "Right before Villwock left for his last attempt at qualifying our team returned the watermelon,"said David.  Villwock's top speed was wiped out due to a violation.

It's one of the final two races of the unlimited hydroplane racing season.  For Dave Villwock and Steve David, it's another chance to try to pull ahead in the battle for National High Points champion and the U-1 designation for 2010.   "It's been really close between us and Elam all year and this weekend's going to be a repeat," said David.

The depressed economy has taken its toll on event sponsorships across the country and Port Angeles has been no exception. Some of the festivals' major supporters have recently had to reprioritize their discretionary spending during the deepest economic downturn in a century.  A lack of support at the local level from both sponsorships and volunteers who help conduct the event contributed to today's decision.

Walt Ottenad split screened the camera looking forward from the U-37 cockpit with a camera facing the rear.  You can watch this amazing heat and see how the U-5 was nipping at the heels of the U-37 nearly the entire race and then pulled ahead just before the finish.

Saturday's heats both had great battles:  Jean Theoret was back in the cockpit and came within a boat length of winning the first heat as Jeff Bernard edged out a win at the finish line.  Steve David led the whole way in the second heat, but Dave Villwock edged him out in the final 1500 feet.

Theoret said his strength still isn't where he wants it to be and so he's turning over driving duties on Sunday to J.W. Myers.  Myers drove the U-37 in Detroit and Tri-Cities after Theoret nearly drowned in a flip in the boat in Madison.

When testing and qualifying for the 2009 Chevrolet Cup at Seafair begins on Friday, Dr. Ken Muscatel will have a virtually new race boat and a new partner.  Ron Jones, Jr. has become his partner and team manager for Superior Racing.  Jones has been doing the extensive rebuild of Muscatel's U-25 in his shop in Pacific, Washington.  Now he'll be the man in charge of the boat, motors, crew and setup.

Defending Columbia Cup champion Steve David and the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison made it a repeat victory.  Dave Villwock and the U-16 had won every race so far this year, but was relegated to the trailer position in the final race and managed to finish 4th.

Some scary moments as the U-7 Graham Trucking went up in the air, tumbled backwards a revolution and a half, and landed upside down.  Driver J. Michael Kelly is OK and was back in the pits with his family and team.

"I pretty much walked away unscratched," said Kelly. "It's a part of racing. It happens."

Chip Hanauer will be testing a boat that runs on bio-fuels - 80 percent coconut oil.  The rest is made up of a light vegetable oil, called Babassu oil.  Boeing has named it BioJet-A.
Building a replica of the 1955 Gale V

It's one of the storied boats in hydroplane racing history, the Gale V.  Now, Bill Black and friends are building a replica of the 1955 Gale V that won the Gold Cup.

Hydroplane drivers race more than just Unlimited Hydroplanes

Brian Perkins and Jeff Bernard are racing 1-litres, 5-litres, National Mods and Unlimiteds this season.   And they are not alone.  Many of the top unlimited drivers grew up driving other classes of boats... and some of them keep doing it.  So what's the big difference between driving the small boats and the big boats?

The recreated Miss Wahoo hit the water for a test session on Lake Washington.  There was a great turnout, including such notables as Mira Slovak, Bill Boeing Jr, Bruce McCaw, Ron Jones, among many others - not to mention Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum members and hydro fans.

Dave Villwock and the U-16 Elam won the 100th running of Unlimited Hydroplane racing's Gold Cup.  He used a new starting strategy that surprised everyone and allowed him to hold off Steve David in the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison in the finals.

The win was Villwock's 7th Gold Cup victory and 58th career win.
